Four SC Students Attend Model UN Spring Meeting in New York

Model UN simulations engage hundreds of thousands of students each year, helping them to learn more about the principles of the United Nations and how it functions.

Winfield, Kan., April 14, 2026 — Four Southwestern College students recently attended the spring international Model UN meeting in New York City.  The group was accompanied by Jacob Goodson, professor of philosophy and division chair of the social sciences at Southwestern College.

The four SC students were Emery Eberhard, Gideon Galdiano, Andrew Porter, and Haleigh Weber.  The students, who represented South Sudan, served on committees tackling issues such as climate change, food scarcity, terrorism, and women’s rights.

Model UN simulations engage hundreds of thousands of students each year, helping them to learn more about the principles of the United Nations and how it functions.

“The opening ceremony on Monday evening involved a keynote address by the current U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, Mike Waltz — who defended and explained the motto, ‘Make the UN Great Again,’” Goodson says.  “We spent Friday morning in the United Nations General Assembly Hall, listening to politicians and professors talk about the future of the United Nations and how participating in Model UN prepares undergraduates for finding careers in global politics and international relations.”
