Winfield Recreation Commission to Upgrade Facilities to Improve Access

The Winfield Recreation Commission serves hundreds of residents each week through youth sports leagues, fitness classes and open recreation hours.

WINFIELD, Kan. — The Winfield Recreation Commission is moving forward with a series of facility upgrades aimed at improving accessibility, safety and overall experience for residents who use local recreational spaces, officials announced this week.

The upgrades include improvements to locker rooms, expanded fitness equipment, updated lighting systems and resurfaced gym and court areas. The project is part of a long-term effort to modernize aging facilities while meeting the growing demand for recreational programs in the community.

In addition to interior upgrades, outdoor facilities are also being addressed. Several courts and fields will be resurfaced and repaired to improve play conditions and reduce maintenance issues. The commission plans to upgrade seating areas and walkways to improve accessibility for individuals with disabilities.

VenJohn said community feedback played a major role in shaping the project.

“We listened to what residents wanted to see improved,” he said. “A lot of people mentioned equipment upgrades and better lighting, so we made those areas a priority.”

The Winfield Recreation Commission serves hundreds of residents each week through youth sports leagues, fitness classes and open recreation hours. Officials said participation has steadily increased over the past few years, making facility improvements more urgent.

City officials are also supporting the project, citing the importance of recreation spaces for community health and engagement. Funding for the upgrades comes from a combination of city support and recreation program revenue.

Construction is expected to be completed in phases to minimize disruptions. While some areas may be temporarily closed, the commission said it will work to keep most programs running on schedule.

VenJohn encouraged residents to stay informed by checking the commission’s website and social media pages for updates on construction timelines and temporary closures.

“These facilities belong to the community,” VenJohn said. “We want residents to feel proud of the spaces they use and know that we are investing in their experience.”

Once upgrades are completed, the commission plans to host a community open house to showcase the improvements and encourage more residents to take advantage of available programs.

Officials said the project reflects Winfield’s ongoing commitment to creating safe, active and inclusive spaces that benefit both current residents and future generations.
